Yeah, I hurt my ankle while I was running while I was preparing for a 5K. My first 5K run. After I injured it and I got home, I went ahead and elevated my ankle. I iced it and I rested it. I was able to walk on it hours later, so I didn’t really expect it to really be a severe injury.
After two days of elevating it and icing it and just trying not to run on it and just as little as possible that had to do with any type of walking, I realized that it was more than what I thought. So I decided to go see medical attention.
The way my provider determined it was a sprain was he actually did some X-rays with the report stating that it was not a fracture – just some soft tissue injury.
When I left the providers’ office, he instructed me to basically just keep it wrapped with an Ace wrap and try not to do any prolonged walking, standing and if I did, then to use an ankle support brace.
My provider did recommend physical therapy. I was evaluated two days after I left the doctor’s office and physical therapist also instructed me on certain exercises to do to rehab my ankle. And also gave me some instructions on how to properly stretch prior to doing any running. I still will get some soreness every now and then, definitely with long distance running.
I have learned to know my body and know when to stop. And even though if I twist it and go, “Oh, it’s nothing,” I tend to think back that it’s better for me to stop now than for me to hurt in the long run and re-damage my injury. I also wear my ankle brace when I do prolonged running.
