As you prepare for your physical fitness tests, there are several things to keep in mind. Runners and other athletes need to be especially cautious and sophisticated in their approach to hip pain or dysfunction. Persistent or chronic pain in the hip region deserves special attention. You may have heard that it’s best to work through the pain, but this is not true. In fact, pain is a warning signal to stop what you're doing, even if the discomfort is minor. See your provider or physical therapist to determine if you are experiencing hip problems. It’s possible that you may simply be experiencing muscle strain or tendinitis. However, it’s possible that you have a more serious condition.
The following types of pain may indicate serious problems, and require immediate attention from your provider.
Progressive loss of motion in the hip
Buttock pain that worsens when you walk
Hip pain in people with circulatory problems
